A nice crowd showed up throughout the day

Every year, NYU hosts the No Quarter Exhibition where it commissions several game designers to design a game for the exhibition. This year Terry Cavanagh, Ramiro Corbetta, and Charley Miller, designed new games for No Quarter. Luke O’ Connor also had his game exhibited as well, being a game made for the experimental gameplay project earlier in the year. Additionally, the NYC Winnitron in all its glory was there for all to play and admire.

It was a fun event for everyone who attended. It’s not often that you get to play games and talk to the designers in such an open manner. Well then, on to the games.

First we have At a Distance by Terry Cavanagh. It is a co-operative puzzle platformer where… Well, if I say much more I’d ruin the experience for you. The game doesn’t tell you the controls, or what to do. You have to figure all that out by yourself.

At a Distance

Hokra is a 4 player game by Ramiro Corbetta. You are separated into two teams and have to try to get your ball into your goal area. This accumulates points for your team. Once your team reaches the maximum number of points you win, and the enemy team is properly taunted by the game.

I Hokra, You Hokra!

Clock by Luke O’Connor is an interesting one button game where you have to dodge the red lines that appear on the clock like structure. More lines are periodically added to the clock, increasing the difficultly by quite a bit…

Woah...

A Good Player is Hard to Find is a game by Charley Miller. It had something to do with forming lines and such. Sadly, I didn’t get to play the game before it was damaged and rendered unplayable (It has since been fixed), so I’ll update this if I do get a chance to go back and play it.

:(

Finally the Winnitron NYC. The Winnitron is an indie games arcade machine where it allows players to play many great 2 player indie games which in many cases were designed exclusively for the Winnitron itself. Super Crate Box Vs. remains my favorite game on the Winnitron to date.

Winnitron: Full of Win!

Of all of these, the Winnitron NYC is my favorite of the bunch simply because the essence of what I love about games; playing great indie games together with people next to you is such a great experience. I don’t believe the Winnitron can revive arcades, but it can potentially make some public spaces more lively.
